{"id":10429,"date":"2013-02-08T13:21:37","date_gmt":"2013-02-08T18:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=10429"},"modified":"2013-02-08T16:03:52","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T21:03:52","slug":"study-examines-effect-of-adding-new-members-to-workgroup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2013\/02\/study-examines-effect-of-adding-new-members-to-workgroup\/","title":{"rendered":"Study examines effect of adding new members to workgroup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Public Library of Science press release via ScienceDaily:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9602\" alt=\"new guy\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/diversity_job_team.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Adding a new member to a working group can create distrust between members and hinder group functions, but a new study suggests that the <strong>distrust created is between older group members rather than about the newcomers- especially when previous group performance with just the older group members is poor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The results are part of a study published January 30 in the open access journal <em>PLOS ONE<\/em> by Matthew McCarter and Roman Sheremeta from Chapman University (U.S).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous studies report that changing members in an existing group hurts group performance, but the underlying reasons have been unclear<\/strong>. To identify these, the researchers in this study asked participants to play a 4-person coordination game. After a group had played, two members of the group were replaced and the newly formed group asked to repeat the game.<\/p>\n<p>The authors found that <strong>replacing old group members with new individuals decreased trust across the group, which caused a drop in the group&#8217;s performance<\/strong>.
