{"id":11940,"date":"2013-04-05T15:12:40","date_gmt":"2013-04-05T19:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=11940"},"modified":"2013-04-08T12:15:24","modified_gmt":"2013-04-08T16:15:24","slug":"study-suggests-emotional-responses-to-the-stresses-of-daily-life-may-predict-long-term-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2013\/04\/study-suggests-emotional-responses-to-the-stresses-of-daily-life-may-predict-long-term-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Study suggests emotional responses to the stresses of daily life may predict long-term mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Association for Psychological Science press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/stressed_senior.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9549\" alt=\"stressed senior\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/stressed_senior.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Our emotional responses to the stresses of daily life may predict our long-term mental health<\/strong>, according to a new study published in <em>Psychological Science<\/em>, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.<\/p>\n<p>Psychological scientist Susan Charles of the University of California, Irvine and colleagues conducted the study in order to answer a long-standing question: <strong>Do daily emotional experiences add up to make the straw that breaks the camel\u2019s back, or do these experiences make us stronger and provide an inoculation against later distress?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using data from two national surveys, <strong>the researchers examined the relationship between daily negative emotions and mental health outcomes ten years later.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Participants\u2019 overall levels of negative emotions predicted psychological distress (e.g., feeling worthless, hopeless, nervous, and\/or restless) and diagnosis of an emotional disorder like anxiety or depression a full decade after the emotions were initially measured.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Participants\u2019 negative emotional responses to daily stressors \u2014 such as argument or a problem at work or home \u2014 predicted psychological distress and self-reported emotional disorder ten years later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers argue that a key strength of the study was their ability to tap a large, national community sample of participants who spanned a wide age range. The results were based on data from 711 participants, both men and women, who ranged in age from 25 to 74. They were all participants in two national, longitudinal survey studies: Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) and National Study of Daily Experiences (NSDE).<\/p>\n<p>According to Charles and her colleagues, these findings show that mental health outcomes aren\u2019t only affected by major life events \u2014 they also bear the impact of seemingly minor emotional experiences.
