{"id":12474,"date":"2013-04-29T13:01:54","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T17:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=12474"},"modified":"2013-05-02T01:36:28","modified_gmt":"2013-05-02T05:36:28","slug":"study-suggests-emphasizing-academic-abilities-may-help-fight-stereotypes-about-jocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2013\/04\/study-suggests-emphasizing-academic-abilities-may-help-fight-stereotypes-about-jocks\/","title":{"rendered":"Study suggests emphasizing academic abilities may help fight stereotypes about jocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Michigan State University press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"st\">\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"basketball\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/images\/blogpics\/youth_fitness_basketball.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>College coaches who emphasize their players\u2019 academic abilities may be the best defense against the effects of \u201cdumb jock\u201d stereotypes<\/strong>, a Michigan State University study suggests.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that student-athletes were significantly more likely to be confident in the classroom if they believed their coaches expected high academic performance, not just good enough grades to be eligible for sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Coaches spend a lot of time with their players, and they can play such an important role to build academic confidence in student-athletes<\/strong>,\u201d said lead author Deborah Feltz, University Distinguished Professor of kinesiology at MSU.<\/p>\n<p>Published in the <em>Journal of College Student Development<\/em>, the study focused on the concept of \u201cstereotype threat.\u201d The theory holds that stereotypes are self-fulfilling prophecies:<strong> They create anxiety in the stereotyped group, causing them to behave in the expected way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Feltz and her graduate students wanted to see what factors influence student-athletes\u2019 susceptibility to the \u201cdumb jock\u201d stereotype.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>It\u2019s well-documented in the literature that many student-athletes hear prejudicial remarks from professors who say things like, \u2018This test is easy enough that even an athlete could pass it<\/strong>,\u2019\u201d Feltz said. \u201cThey\u2019re kind of the last group of students who can be openly discriminated against.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers surveyed more than 300 student-athletes representing men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams from small and large universities and a range of sports, from basketball and football to cross-country and rowing.<\/p>\n<p>They found the more strongly student-athletes identified themselves as athletes, the less confident they were with their academic skills, and the more keenly they felt that others expected them to do poorly in school. Players in high-profile sports were more likely to feel they were weak students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feltz said the data suggest that coaches who put a premium on education may be in the best position to boost their players\u2019 confidence in the classroom<\/strong>, but professors, academic advisers and classmates also have a part to play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t have to do much,\u201d she said. <strong>\u201cIt may be enough to just remind players they are college students<\/strong>, which is a big deal, you know?
