{"id":15714,"date":"2013-10-10T11:44:54","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T15:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=15714"},"modified":"2013-10-10T10:27:26","modified_gmt":"2013-10-10T14:27:26","slug":"partner-violence-linked-to-specific-drinking-environments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2013\/10\/partner-violence-linked-to-specific-drinking-environments\/","title":{"rendered":"Partner violence linked to specific drinking environments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Wiley media release:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/alcohol-bottles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15022\" alt=\"alcohol bottles\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/alcohol-bottles.jpg\" width=\"290\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a>Researchers have long known that <strong>violence toward spouses and partners increases with the frequency and volume of drinking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A study published today in the scientific journal\u00a0<i>Addiction<\/i>\u00a0shows that the context in which drinking occurs also appears to play a role in violence against partners, with <strong>male violence being linked to drinking away from home and female violence being linked to drinking at home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the Prevention Research Center in California and Arizona State University, USA, <strong>surveyed more than 1500 California couples, gathering information about their drinking in six specific contexts<\/strong>: restaurants, bars, parties at someone else&#8217;s house, quiet evenings at home, with friends in one&#8217;s own home, and in parks and other public places.<\/p>\n<p>They found that men drinking in bars and at parties away from home and women drinking in parks and public places were both associated with increased male-to-female violence. <strong>They also found a link between men drinking during quiet evenings at home and increased female-to-male violence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From a research perspective, these findings suggest that <strong>we need to consider what occurs within different drinking contexts (besides alcohol consumption) that might trigger partner aggression<\/strong>. From a prevention perspective, the results are quite hopeful: it may be possible to reduce violence against spouses and partners by encouraging people in risky relationships to avoid drinking in certain contexts.<\/p>\n<p>Such advice could well be more effective in the short-term than encouraging people to drink less.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Wiley media release: Researchers have long known that violence toward spouses and partners increases with the frequency and volume of drinking.
