{"id":15760,"date":"2013-10-17T09:15:09","date_gmt":"2013-10-17T13:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=15760"},"modified":"2013-10-17T01:21:54","modified_gmt":"2013-10-17T05:21:54","slug":"doctors-should-routinely-evaluate-patients-for-physical-activity-habits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2013\/10\/doctors-should-routinely-evaluate-patients-for-physical-activity-habits\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctors should routinely evaluate patients for physical activity habits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the American Heart Association Scientific Statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/caring_doctor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9594\" alt=\"doctor with patient\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/caring_doctor.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Doctors should evaluate your physical activity habits as routinely as checking your blood pressure and other risk factors for cardiovascular diseases<\/strong>, the American Heart Association recommends in a scientific statement published in its journal Circulation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most healthcare providers have not routinely assessed physical activity levels among their patients because they have not had the right tools,&#8221; said Scott Strath, Ph.D., lead author of the statement and associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee&#8217;s College of Health Sciences. &#8220;<strong>Yet, physical inactivity is about as bad for you as smoking.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new statement includes a &#8220;decision matrix&#8221; to help providers select the most appropriate evaluation method for their patients, <strong>including low-cost or no-cost options, such as questionnaires that patients complete when they arrive for their appointment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>An exercise checkup <strong>should cover types, frequency, duration and intensity of physical activity<\/strong> at work, home and during leisure time, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors should also counsel patients on how to include more exercise in their daily lives and do a physical activity assessment as part of routine medical care, Strath said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity five days a week or more<\/strong>, or at least 20 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity three days a week or more. You should also do moderate- to high-intensity muscle strengthening at least two days a week.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Co-authors are Leonard A. Kaminsky, Ph.D., committee co-chair; Barbara E.
