{"id":19730,"date":"2017-03-26T16:34:21","date_gmt":"2017-03-26T20:34:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=19730"},"modified":"2017-03-26T02:37:22","modified_gmt":"2017-03-26T06:37:22","slug":"wise-deliberation-sustains-cooperation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2017\/03\/wise-deliberation-sustains-cooperation\/","title":{"rendered":"Wise deliberation sustains cooperation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the University of Waterloo press release:<\/p>\n<p id=\"first\" class=\"lead\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10568\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/cute_geek_computer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" \/><strong>Giving people time to think about cooperating on a task can have a positive effect if they are big-picture thinkers, but if they tend to focus on their own, immediate experience, the time to think may make them less cooperative<\/strong>, University of Waterloo research has found.<\/p>\n<div id=\"text\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A series of three experiments, conducted by University of Waterloo researchers Igor Grossmann, Justin Brienza and Romana Bobocel, also found that wise, or big-picture, thinkers were able to sustain their cooperation with others when given time to deliberate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;What this study tells us is that the <strong>effect of thinking time on cooperation depends on the type of deliberation people use<\/strong>,&#8221; says Igor Grossmann, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Waterloo and the study&#8217;s lead author.&#8221; In practical terms, people trying to get groups to cooperate, such as employers or in school settings, may really need to understand people&#8217;s deliberation styles before deciding how much time to give them for a given task.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The series of three studies looked at over 1,000 people with varying capacities for wise reasoning &#8212; the ability to think big picture, take an outside perspective, recognize the limits one&#8217;s own knowledge &#8212; and how well they were able to participate in cooperative tasks with others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Grossmann and his colleagues&#8217; study consisted of three experiments.
