{"id":19762,"date":"2017-03-20T09:46:01","date_gmt":"2017-03-20T13:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=19762"},"modified":"2017-03-20T02:49:20","modified_gmt":"2017-03-20T06:49:20","slug":"cyberbullying-rarely-occurs-in-isolation-research-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2017\/03\/cyberbullying-rarely-occurs-in-isolation-research-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyberbullying rarely occurs in isolation, research finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the University of Warwick press release:<\/p>\n<p id=\"first\" class=\"lead\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10551\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/cyberbully.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/cyberbully.jpg 300w, https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/cyberbully-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><strong>Cyberbullying is mostly an extension of playground bullying<\/strong> &#8212; and doesn&#8217;t create large numbers of new victims &#8212; according to research from the University of Warwick.<\/p>\n<div id=\"text\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Professor Dieter Wolke in the Department of Psychology finds that although cyberbullying is prevalent and harmful, it is a modern tool used to harm victims already bullied by traditional, face-to-face means.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In a study of almost 3000 pupils aged 11-16 from UK secondary schools, twenty-nine percent reported being bullied, but one percent of adolescents were victims of cyberbullying alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">During the survey, pupils completed the Bullying and Friendship Interview, which has been used in numerous studies to assess bullying and victimization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">They were asked about direct victimisation (e.g., &#8220;been hit\/beaten up&#8221; or &#8220;called bad\/nasty names&#8221;); relational victimization (e.g., &#8220;had nasty lies\/rumours spread about you&#8221;); and cyber-victimization (e.g., &#8220;had rumours spread about you online,&#8221; &#8220;had embarrassing pictures posted online without permission,&#8221; or &#8220;got threatening or aggressive emails, instant messages, text messages or tweets&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">All the teenagers who reported being bullied in any form had <strong>lower self-esteem, and more behavioural difficulties than non-victims<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">However, <strong>those who were bullied by multiple means<\/strong> &#8212; direct victimisation, relational victimisation and cyber-victimisation combined &#8212; <strong>demonstrated the lowest self-esteem and the most emotional and behavioural problems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The study finds that cyberbullying is &#8220;another tool in the toolbox&#8221; for traditional bullying, but doesn&#8217;t create many unique online victims.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As a result, Professor Wolke argues that public health strategies to prevent bullying overall should still mainly focus on combatting traditional, face-to-face bullying &#8212; as that is the root cause of the vast majority of cyberbullying.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Professor Wolke comments, &#8220;Bullying is a way to gain power and peer acceptance, being the &#8216;cool&#8217; kid in class.
