{"id":24413,"date":"2017-11-12T11:27:31","date_gmt":"2017-11-12T16:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=24413"},"modified":"2017-11-09T18:28:37","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T23:28:37","slug":"morning-larks-have-weaker-sleep-spindles-during-night-than-night-owls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2017\/11\/morning-larks-have-weaker-sleep-spindles-during-night-than-night-owls\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Morning larks&#8217; have weaker sleep spindles during night than &#8216;night owls&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the University of Helsinki press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"first\" class=\"lead\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9618\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/sleeping_couple.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>A new study from the University of Helsinki, Finland, shows that <strong>individual circadian preference is associated with brain activity patterns during the night<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"text\">\n<p><strong>Sleep spindles<\/strong> are <strong>bursts of oscillatory brain activity visible on an EEG<\/strong> that occur mainly during stage 2 sleep. <strong>Sleep spindles are linked for example to sleep maintenance and strengthening of the memory traces during sleep<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The study explored the association between individual circadian preference and sleep spindle activity among 170 17-year-old participants, who underwent a sleep EEG monitoring at their home environment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We observed a <strong>significantly weaker spindle activity among the morning preference group compared to other groups<\/strong>.
