{"id":30338,"date":"2019-11-30T09:14:41","date_gmt":"2019-11-30T14:14:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=30338"},"modified":"2019-11-18T21:59:30","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T02:59:30","slug":"study-suggests-there-is-pattern-to-peoples-musical-preferences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2019\/11\/study-suggests-there-is-pattern-to-peoples-musical-preferences\/","title":{"rendered":"Study suggests there is pattern to people&#8217;s musical preferences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Society for Neuroscience press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"first\" class=\"lead\"><strong>People prefer songs with only a moderate amount of uncertainty and unpredictability<\/strong>, according to research recently published in\u00a0<strong><em>JNeurosci<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"text\">\n<p>Scientists have long struggled to understand why activities of little apparent evolutionary value, like listening to music, bring so much pleasure. <strong>Previous studies have linked listening to and making predictions about music with activation in reward centers of the brain<\/strong> but have produced <strong>conflicting results on how musical predictions and surprises relate to pleasure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Gold\u00a0<em>et al<\/em>. employed a mathematical model to determine the predictability and uncertainty of musical fragments and then asked listeners to rate how much they liked the songs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listeners preferred songs of medium complexity, such as those that counterbalanced uncertain expectations with ultimately predictable musical events<\/strong>.
