{"id":32524,"date":"2020-10-15T16:12:36","date_gmt":"2020-10-15T20:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=32524"},"modified":"2020-10-06T02:54:23","modified_gmt":"2020-10-06T06:54:23","slug":"study-suggests-noise-can-put-you-off-your-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2020\/10\/study-suggests-noise-can-put-you-off-your-food\/","title":{"rendered":"Study suggests noise can put you off your food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Flinders University press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"first\" class=\"lead\"><strong>Noise can make or break a dining experience<\/strong>, according to a laboratory study replicating common noise levels in restaurants.<\/p>\n<div id=\"text\">\n<p>The acoustic experts say the study proves that high noise levels can play a major part in a dining experience &#8212; along with the quality of the food and restaurant service.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our study not only shows that <strong>relaxing music at low noise levels increases food enjoyment<\/strong> but indicates that <strong>even &#8216;normal&#8217; background noise levels in restaurants can be unpleasant to diners<\/strong>,&#8221; says lead author, Flinders University PhD candidate Mahmoud Alamir.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do not always recognise the <strong>cumulative<\/strong> <strong>effect<\/strong> of noise to our stress or annoyance levels, but we see how <strong>every one of us has sensitivity to noise in different ways<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The study considered factors such as age, gender and noise sensitivity to background noise.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, noise-sensitive people, as well as older people and females, reported lower enjoyment of food when there is elevated background noise.<\/p>\n<p>Flinders University acoustic engineer and study co-author Dr Kristy Hansen says the results highlight the importance of noise management strategies in restaurants to provide better dining experiences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This could include more practical acoustic design of dining areas to suit different groups of people,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Quiet dining areas should be considered for older and noise-sensitive people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The international research group plans to release more information and guidelines on &#8216;healthy&#8217; noise levels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"impact-unit-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"pgs-dpg-card\" data-pgs-partner-id=\"sciencedaily\" data-loaded=\"true\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Flinders University press release: Noise can make or break a dining experience, according to a laboratory study replicating common noise levels in restaurants.
