{"id":34126,"date":"2026-07-23T11:49:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T15:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=34126"},"modified":"2026-07-23T09:58:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T13:58:29","slug":"42-studies-confirm-air-pollution-is-linked-to-higher-parkinsons-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2026\/07\/42-studies-confirm-air-pollution-is-linked-to-higher-parkinsons-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"42 Studies Confirm: Air Pollution Is Linked to Higher Parkinson&#8217;s Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We know that air pollution is bad for us, and if we think about it, it&#8217;s probably obvious that it&#8217;s particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/air-pollution-strongly-associated-with-dna-mutations-tied-to-lung-cancer\">bad for our lungs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But many people don&#8217;t realize how much it affects many other bodily systems.<\/p>\n<p>Pollutants in the air don&#8217;t just get into our lung tissue and stay there.<\/p>\n<p>The tiniest pollutants from car and truck tailpipe emissions, industrial sources, and wildfires can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0147651322012842\">penetrate through the lungs<\/a> and start circulating in our blood, affecting other organs. These fine particles can trigger inflammation and oxidative stress throughout the body<\/p>\n<p>They can even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/researchers-uncover-a-potential-highway-that-carries-air-pollution-to-the-brain\">get into the brain<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Studies in animals and people have shown evidence that those smallest particulates \u2013 known as PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> \u2013 contribute to a laundry list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10937404.2025.2450354\">brain-related maladies<\/a>, from dementia to MS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/air-pollution-isnt-only-bad-for-lungs-say-studies-its-also-bad-for-mental-health\">depression and anxiety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-link-between-air-pollution-and-alzheimers-is-now-clearer-than-ever\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>, brain tumors, and stroke.<\/p>\n<p>Add another one to the list: A new <a class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/meta-analysis\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-linkid=\"73088\" data-postid=\"210157\">meta-analysis<\/a> led by researchers at the University of Cambridge in the UK, which reviewed decades of research, suggests that breathing polluted air for years could increase the risk of developing <a class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IYl\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-linkid=\"73029\" data-postid=\"210157\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a> disease<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0160412026003351\">study, published in <em>Environment International<\/em><\/a>, analyzed 42 prior studies involving populations in North America, Europe, and Asia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-6 Purch_Y_C_0_6-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_6\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-6 Purch_Y_C_0_6\">It&#8217;s the largest review yet to examine whether long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution is linked to several major neurodegenerative diseases.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-7 Purch_Y_C_0_7-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_7\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-7 Purch_Y_C_0_7\">The clearest signal emerged for Parkinson&#8217;s disease, which was the focus of 26 of the analyzed studies.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Researchers found that for every 5-microgram-per-cubic-meter increase in long-term exposure to PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> (fine particulate air pollution), the risk of developing Parkinson&#8217;s increased by about 10 percent.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-9 Purch_Y_C_0_9-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_9\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-9 Purch_Y_C_0_9\">Exposure to larger pollution particles, called PM<sub>10<\/sub>, was associated with an 18 percent higher risk of Parkinson&#8217;s disease for every 15-microgram-per-cubic-meter increasePM<sub>10<\/sub> are the particles you can often see with the naked eye, like pollen, agricultural dust, soot and ash from fires, the smoky part of diesel exhaust, or mold spores.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-11 Purch_Y_C_0_11-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_11\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-11 Purch_Y_C_0_11\">To ground those numbers in reality, the researchers point out that the average PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> concentration measured along roadsides in Central London in 2023 was 10 micrograms per cubic meter.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-11 Purch_Y_C_0_11\">Air pollution particles are often classified into two sizes. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pm-pollution\/particulate-matter-pm-basics\">EPA<\/a>)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean everyone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-shocking-99-of-us-are-now-breathing-unhealthy-air-who-warns\">living in polluted air<\/a> (which is common in urban areas but increasingly so in rural areas too) is destined to develop Parkinson&#8217;s, just that the risk increases.<\/p>\n<p>Individual risk remains relatively low, and many other factors \u2013 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/early-warning-signs-of-parkinsons-may-be-hidden-in-your-blood\">genetics, age<\/a>, and diet \u2013 also influence who develops the disease. But because millions of people are exposed to air pollution every day, even a modest increase in risk could translate into a substantial number of additional cases across a population.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-13 Purch_Y_C_0_13-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_13\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-13 Purch_Y_C_0_13\">Importantly, the other risk factors for the disease, like age and genetics aren&#8217;t things that can be changed, air pollution is largely within human control.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-14 Purch_Y_C_0_14-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_14\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-14 Purch_Y_C_0_14\">&#8220;As the global burden of neurodegenerative diseases continues to grow, understanding modifiable environmental risk factors is increasingly important,&#8221; Annalan Navaratnam, a clinical researcher at the University of Cambridge, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/annalan-mathew-navaratnam-8401aa185_parkinsonsdisease-airpollution-environmentalhealth-share-7483827369959563264-bwpr\/\">said on LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-15 Purch_Y_C_0_15-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_15\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-15 Purch_Y_C_0_15\">&#8220;Our findings add to the evidence that improving air quality could have benefits extending beyond cardiovascular and respiratory health, potentially contributing to strategies to reduce the burden of Parkinson&#8217;s disease.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-16 Purch_Y_C_0_16-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_16\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-16 Purch_Y_C_0_16\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"bordeaux-slot_static_4-hook_3\" class=\"bordeaux-slot\">Cleaner transportation, reduced industrial emissions and stricter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/common-home-appliances-emit-trillions-of-harmful-particles-study-finds\">air quality standards<\/a> won&#8217;t eliminate Parkinson&#8217;s disease, but they may help lower the number of people who develop it.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-17 Purch_Y_C_0_17-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_17\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-17 Purch_Y_C_0_17\">The review wasn&#8217;t entirely bad news, however. The researchers found no convincing evidence that long-term exposure to PM<sub>2.5 <\/sub>or nitrogen dioxide (another common tailpipe and industrial emission) increased the risk of multiple sclerosis, nor did they find a clear link between PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> and motor neuron diseases such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/one-major-pollutant-in-fossil-fuels-has-been-linked-with-als\">amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)<\/a>.But the researchers also pointed out that there simply weren&#8217;t many studies to analyze \u2013 just three each for multiple sclerosis and motor neuron disease \u2013 making it difficult to draw firm conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the findings and lack of findings for some diseases &#8220;may be down to how the studies were designed,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/long-term-exposure-to-air-pollution-linked-to-increased-risk-of-parkinsons-disease\">says<\/a> Navaratnam.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We urgently need more research, in larger populations, to examine what is a significant public health issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-21 Purch_Y_C_0_21-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_21\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-21 Purch_Y_C_0_21\">One of the biggest challenges is that neurodegenerative diseases develop slowly, often over decades. That makes them notoriously difficult to study. People move, pollution levels change over time, and accurately estimating an individual&#8217;s lifetime exposure isn&#8217;t straightforward.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-22 Purch_Y_C_0_22-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_22\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-22 Purch_Y_C_0_22\">Still, usable information can be gleaned by looking at large population groups or multiple studies, as this research does.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-23 Purch_Y_C_0_23-container\">\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_23\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-23 Purch_Y_C_0_23\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-24 Purch_Y_C_0_24-container\">\n<div id=\"bordeaux-slot_static_4-hook_5\" class=\"bordeaux-slot\">The researchers argue that air pollution deserves attention as one of the few potentially modifiable risk factors for these diseases.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot--container ad-slot--container-content ad-slot--container-content-25 Purch_Y_C_0_25-container\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"Purch_Y_C_0_25\" class=\"ad-slot ad-slot--content ad-slot--content-25 Purch_Y_C_0_25\">&#8220;These findings add to a growing and strong body of evidence of the many adverse health impacts of air pollution worldwide ranging from a wide variety of diseases across every human organ system to premature mortality,&#8221; epidemiologist Alexandra Tien-Smith from the University of Cambridge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/long-term-exposure-to-air-pollution-linked-to-increased-risk-of-parkinsons-disease\">says<\/a>. This research serves as another reminder that clean air is doing more than keeping skies clear instead of smog-grey.
