The key lies in the strong coupling between climate and society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Humanity has the knowledge and technology to address <strong>climate change<\/strong>, but translating this into action to reduce emissions is particularly difficult. In 2025, energy-related CO? emissions reached approximately 38.1 billion tons, setting a new record. Why is addressing the climate crisis always \u201ceasier said than done\u201d? A new Perspective, published in the journal <em>Science Bulletin<\/em>, argues that this persistent gap between knowledge and action is not primarily a technical or political failure but a conceptual one. Researchers and policymakers still treat climate and human society as two separate systems to be linked together, rather than as a single, indivisible, co-evolving whole.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, a research team led by Professor Ye Chao of Fudan University, in collaboration with scientists from multiple countries, including U.S. National Academy of Sciences member Jessica Fanzo and European Academy of Sciences members Alexander Baklanov and Michael Meadows, published an article in Science Bulletin titled &#8220;Climate and society as one: A (de)coupling future for escalating climate challenges.&#8221; The article points out that the root of the climate problem lies in a long-neglected cognitive blind spot: <strong>treating climate change and human society as two separate systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Why the distinction matters: even sophisticated tools such as Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs), the authors note, tend to treat social norms, political dynamics, risk perceptions, and institutional change as external background rather than as endogenous forces that actively shape climate outcomes. As a result, policies frequently deliver incremental or merely technological fixes that leave the systemic nature of the problem untouched, and can even protect infrastructure while deepening the vulnerability of poorer communities.<\/p>\n<p>The team further published a perspective article in Geography and Sustainability, proposing the &#8220;M\u00f6bius-based Coupling Climate-Social System&#8221; framework and structuring it with three principles:<strong> human-environment coupling, telecoupling, and strategic coupling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Governance itself is frequently \u201cdecoupling\u201d from the systems it tries to steer. Global commitments are hard to translate into national action; coordination across sectors such as energy, agriculture, transport, finance, and health remains weak; and short political cycles collide with the long timescales of climate change, producing a \u201ccollective action trap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To show what the CSS lens can reveal, the authors revisit a classic idea in environmental economics: the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), which holds that <strong>economic growth eventually leads to falling emission<\/strong>s. Plotting CO? emissions per capita against GDP per capita for a range of economies, they reinterpret the curve not as an inevitable path but as a map of dynamic coupling states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeak coupling\u201d: pre-peak economies where growth is still tightly tied to rising emissions (for example, China and India today, echoing the early industrial trajectories of today\u2019s developed nations).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrong coupling\u201d: post-peak economies that combine continued growth with declining emissions (for example, the United States and Germany, which passed their emission peaks decades ago).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe-coupling\u201d: given here a deliberately negative meaning, an \u201canti-EKC\u201d state in fossil-fuel-dependent or structurally poor economies that fail to align development with climate resilience.<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, <strong>these states are neither fixed nor one-directional<\/strong>. Governance is the decisive steering mechanism that can push a country in either direction. They point to abrupt reversals of international climate commitments as forces that can degrade \u201cstrong coupling\u201d into weaker states, and to China\u2019s rapid deployment of New Energy Vehicles (which reached 31.4 million on the road by 2024 and made up 41.83% of new vehicle registrations) as an example of policy actively bending a nation\u2019s emissions curve toward \u201cstrong coupling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Making the CSS paradigm operational will require more than bolting existing models together. It calls for genuine \u201c<strong>team science<\/strong>\u201d and<strong> knowledge co-production<\/strong>, in which geographers, climate scientists, public-administration and political scientists, economists, and sociologists co-design models, assumptions, and feedback mechanisms from the outset, for instance by coupling IAMs with agent-based models that better capture human behavior. The authors highlight emerging efforts such as the Earth Commission\u2019s \u201cSafe and Just Earth System Boundaries,\u201d national Citizens\u2019 Assemblies on climate, \u201cJust Transition\u201d funds, and open-data platforms like OS-Climate as concrete steps in this direction.<\/p>\n<p>Driven by rapidly compounding factors such as trade frictions, geopolitical instability, and artificial intelligence, the future of this coupling system is fraught with uncertainty.
