Sometimes that\u2019s a good thing."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sept. 10, 2026<\/p>\n<p>COLUMBUS, Ohio \u2013 Parents often learn the hard way that to make it anywhere on time, they should calculate how much time they think they need to get ready \u2014 and double it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard enough for adults with deep-rooted mental checklists to make it out the door. For young children, such lists give way to treasure maps.<\/p>\n<p>Everything from clothing choices to snacks and toys for the car require diplomatic negotiations that can\u2019t be rushed without risking a meltdown. The clock is ticking, but your child is blissfully unaware and is suddenly more interested in staying home.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas adults rely on streamlined internal mind maps to carry out their daily routines, young children\u2019s brains appear to be wired for distraction. According to a review paper published recently in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/action\/showPdf?pii=S1364-6613%2826%2900178-6\"><em>Trends in Cognitive Sciences<\/em><\/a>, what might look and feel like pure chaos \u2014 or worse, obstinance \u2014 is an important window into how growing minds think and learn through exploration.<\/p>\n<p>In the paper, lead author <a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.osu.edu\/people\/sloutsky.1\">Vladimir Sloutsky<\/a>, a professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.osu.edu\/\">psychology<\/a> at The Ohio State University, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.osu.edu\/distracting-adults-during-task-makes-them-behave-like-children\/\">revisits research his lab previously reported<\/a> in the <em>Journal of Experimental Psychology: General<\/em>, and notes that \u201cchildren tend to explore broadly, and, despite its costs, exploration confers important benefits, especially early in development, when they know little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, Sloutsky said, \u201cthey are<strong> humans learning to be human<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When choosing between trying something new (exploration) or repeating actions that have already proven successful (exploitation), learners of all ages encounter what researchers call the \u201cexploration-exploitation dilemma.\u201d Trying new things might prove to be a waste of time and energy, but repeating familiar actions could prevent someone from acquiring new skills or knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Adults are typically more exploitative, preferring to repeat actions that have previously led to successful, rewarding outcomes, while children are less selective about where they direct their attention. Sloutsky and his co-authors wanted to find out more about what is driving this exploratory behavior, particularly in children between the ages of 3 and 8 years old.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, the prevailing theory was that children explore simply because they are naturally curious \u2014 or, possibly, because their decision-making is more random. Sloutsky\u2019s work offers a different explanation: Early exploration is driven by the immaturity of a child\u2019s working memory system.<\/p>\n<p>A mature <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2026-84054-001\">working memory<\/a> helps adults hold onto a plan and selectively filter out distractions, while a<strong>n immature working memory<\/strong>, by contrast, is set to \u201cdistributed attention,\u201d meaning young children are prone to spreading their attention broadly. To test this, Sloutsky\u2019s team overloaded adults\u2019 working memory by asking them to complete a decision-making game while also reporting whenever two consecutive odd numbers appeared in a stream of continuous numbers. When their working memories were taxed, adults in the study abandoned their strategic choices and explored more broadly, exhibiting attentional patterns nearly identical to 5-year-olds.<\/p>\n<p>While children\u2019s lack of focus might make leaving the house a test of patience, it serves a crucial evolutionary purpose, ensuring that young learners absorb as much information as possible about the world. \u201cBecause they don\u2019t have a fully developed working memory system, children will explore and resample, especially in less familiar situations. An adult will quickly decide that something is worthy of attention and other things are not. Children do not make those selective decisions as quickly,\u201d Sloutsky said.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019ve researched nearby gas stations and found a couple with lower prices. You might start to frequent those stations without continuing to search for better options. Meanwhile, other stations are dropping their prices and becoming more competitive, but you won\u2019t benefit because you are certain that your initial choices are the best ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause children explore, they may not immediately optimize the benefit of the best option, but they also won\u2019t lose out if something in the environment changes,\u201d Sloutsky explained. \u201cThat is where exploratory behavior becomes very beneficial, guarding them against being entrapped by their own knowledge early in development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloutsky hopes studies like this help remind parents that kids \u201care <strong>annoying and destructive for a reason<\/strong>: They need to acquire a lot of knowledge in a relatively short period of time. We need to provide them with things that are OK to break, because exploring and breaking things is how they learn about the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you plot immaturity \u2014 measured by the onset of the first molar in mammals or the age of sexual maturity \u2014 against brain size, you will find an almost perfect dependence: the greater the brain size, the longer the period of immaturity, he noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren are almost completely immobile for the first year of life, disorganized for the next three, extreme risk-takers for the next 15 and self-insufficient for the first 22 years,\u201d Sloutsky said. \u201cIt is extraordinarily costly, and that cost is mainly borne by caregivers. But it is necessary given how much kids need to learn.
