We all know that our objective amount of time can\u2019t be increased (there are only 24 hours in a day), but\u00a0a new study suggests that <strong>volunteering our limited time\u2014giving it away\u2014 may actually increase our sense of unhurried leisure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Across four different experiments, researchers found that <strong>people\u2019s subjective sense of having time, called \u2018time affluence,\u2019 can be increased<\/strong>: compared with wasting time, spending time on oneself, and even gaining a windfall of \u2018free\u2019 time, <strong>spending time on others increased participants\u2019 feelings of time affluen<\/strong>ce.<\/p>\n<p>Lead researcher and psychological scientist Cassie Mogilner of the University of Pennsylvania believes this is because <strong>giving away time boosts one\u2019s sense of personal competence and efficiency, and this in turn stretches out time in our minds<\/strong>.
