{"id":4847,"date":"2012-07-19T23:11:40","date_gmt":"2012-07-20T03:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=4847"},"modified":"2012-07-19T23:11:40","modified_gmt":"2012-07-20T03:11:40","slug":"study-suggests-being-in-awe-can-expand-time-enhance-well-being","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2012\/07\/study-suggests-being-in-awe-can-expand-time-enhance-well-being\/","title":{"rendered":"Study suggests being in awe can expand time, enhance well-being"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Association for Psychological Science press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"awe\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/images\/blogpics\/Park.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"200\" \/>It doesn\u2019t matter what we\u2019ve experienced \u2013 whether it\u2019s the breathtaking scope of the Grand Canyon, the ethereal beauty of the Aurora Borealis, or the exhilarating view from the top of the Eiffel Tower \u2013 at some point in our lives we\u2019ve all had the feeling of being in a complete and overwhelming sense of awe.<\/p>\n<p>Awe seems to be a universal emotion, but it has been largely neglected by scientists\u2014until now.<\/p>\n<p>Psychological scientists Melanie Rudd and Jennifer Aaker of Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Kathleen Vohs of the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management devised a way to study this feeling of awe in the laboratory. Across three different experiments, they found that <strong>jaw-dropping moments made participants feel like they had more time available and made them more patient, less materialistic, and more willing to volunteer time to help others<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that the effects that awe has on decision-making and well-being can be explained by <strong>awe\u2019s ability to actually change our subjective experience of time by slowing it down<\/strong>.
