{"id":7320,"date":"2012-10-15T09:20:49","date_gmt":"2012-10-15T13:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=7320"},"modified":"2012-10-22T23:42:14","modified_gmt":"2012-10-23T03:42:14","slug":"study-to-investigate-effect-of-turmeric-on-alzheimers-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2012\/10\/study-to-investigate-effect-of-turmeric-on-alzheimers-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"Study to investigate effect of turmeric on Alzheimer&#8217;s prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the ECU press release via HealthCanal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/turmeric.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7417\" title=\"turmeric\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/turmeric.jpg\" alt=\"Turmeric\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><strong>A compound found in a common spice could hold the key to preventing Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than 200 Australians are diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s disease every day and by 2050 more than one million Australians will suffer from the disease.<\/p>\n<p>A 12 month clinical trial in partnership with ECU, the McCusker Alzheimer\u2019s Research Foundation and Anglican Retirement Villages (ARV) is <strong>investigating whether curcumin, found in turmeric, could prevent the onset of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Led by ECU Foundation Chair Ageing and Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Professor Ralph Martins and ARV Dementia Research Consultant Kathryn Goozee the clinical trial will see 100 residents within ARV take supplements of curcumin or placebo while reviewing results from amyloid brain scans, memory tests and blood biomarker results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The study will also be utilising retinal scanning, a recently developed technology that offers a non-invasive, lower cost, alternative to brain scanning.<\/strong> <a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Curcumin is already known to be a powerful antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory and could combat beta amyloid, a protein responsible for Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The presence of beta amyloid has been shown to precede the onset of Alzheimer\u2019s symptoms by up to 20 years and there are hopes curcumin could offer hope as a preventative<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Goozee said it was critical that solutions were found to prevent the massive increase in dementia predicted in coming decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is so much that can be achieved in prevention with simple lifestyle modifications, and this type of study will provide some of those answers,\u201d Ms Goozee said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can demonstrate that a safe, inexpensive nutraceutical, like curcumin, optimises health and preserves a cognitive function, it would be a significant advance in keeping Alzheimer\u2019s at bay.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the ECU press release via HealthCanal: A compound found in a common spice could hold the key to preventing Alzheimer\u2019s disease.
