{"id":9232,"date":"2012-12-20T13:15:36","date_gmt":"2012-12-20T18:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/?p=9232"},"modified":"2012-12-20T13:16:12","modified_gmt":"2012-12-20T18:16:12","slug":"study-suggests-chronic-worriers-at-higher-risk-for-ptsd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/news\/2012\/12\/study-suggests-chronic-worriers-at-higher-risk-for-ptsd\/","title":{"rendered":"Study suggests chronic worriers at higher risk for PTSD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Michigan State University press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Worrying\" src=\"http:\/\/therapytoronto.ca\/images\/blogpics\/thinking_worry.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>People who worry constantly are at greater risk for post-traumatic stress disorder<\/strong>, according to new Michigan State University research published in the journal <em>Psychological Medicine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Many people experience traumatic events such as the death of a loved one, being assaulted or witnessing violence, but <strong>only a small minority develop PTSD<\/strong>, said study author Naomi Breslau, a professor of epidemiology at MSU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the question is, \u2018What\u2019s the difference between those who develop PTSD and the majority who don\u2019t,\u2019\u201d Breslau said. \u201cThis paper says <strong>people who are habitually anxious are more vulnerable. It\u2019s an important risk factor<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Breslau reached that conclusion by analyzing data from a decade-long study of about 1,000 randomly selected people in southeast Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of the study, participants answered 12 questions that gauged what psychiatric experts call neuroticism, a trait marked by chronic anxiety, depression and a tendency to overreact to everyday challenges and disappointments. They then had follow-up assessments at three, five and 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Half the participants experienced a traumatic event during the study period. Those who scored higher on the neuroticism scale as the study began were more likely to end up among the 5 percent who developed PTSD.<\/p>\n<p>Breslau said the findings are particularly persuasive because the study assessed participants\u2019 <strong>personalities before they had a traumatic experience, rather than measuring neuroticism among those who already had PTSD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been studies of neuroticism and PTSD, but they\u2019ve all been retrospective,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re never sure of the order of things in a retrospective study.
